physics
Originated by student request, this course focuses on developing a strong foundation in physics through hands-on experimentation, open class discussion, and and problem solving. Students are assigned tutorial videos to watch before class, and class time is spent on further discussion and problem solving. This course is ideal for incoming ninth graders in the Newton and Brookline Public School systems. Students will learn Newton's Laws, apply these laws to problems involving motion, and then will learn about force, momentum, and energy. Students will then consider circular motion, center of gravity, and how these principles govern the world we live in.
Prerequisites: A foundation in algebra 1/ ability to manipulate and solve equations. No science prerequisites.
This course runs from July 16th through August 23rd and meets on Tuesdays from 5:30pm - 7:30pm and Saturdays from 10 am - 12pm.

chemistry
This course is designed for students looking to take chemistry for the first time in the fall. Students will gain a strong foundation in the structure of the atom, the quantum model, bonds, and periodic trends. Students will then move towards problem solving and will work on problems involving reaction types, stoichiometry, thermodynamics, and nuclear chemistry. The course closely mirrors expectations of a standard or honors level 10th grade chemistry class.
